Located in the northern part of Diego County in Southern California, Carlsbad is a coastal city that is situated south of downtown Los Angeles and north of downtown San Diego. Carlsbad is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is located along a lagoon that is in the Pacific Ocean, which is just about the south of Oceanside, which is also considered to be a vegetable- and flower-growing district during the winter. The area where Carlsbad is located was long inhabited by Luiseño Indians even before the arrival of the Spanish settlements. Carlsbad was first developed to become a cattle station along the Camino Real. When the Santa Fe Railway reached the city, its arrival brought the city's beautiful beaches to spur its development to become a famous beach resort and vacation destination. At present, Carlsbad is home to Legoland California and other popular attractions.
