Cathedral City is located in the state of California and a city in Riverside County. Situated in the northwestern part of the Coachella Valley that is in San Bernardino Mountains in the north, the San Jacinto Mountains to the south, and with San Gorgonio Pass in the west. The city is colloquially known as the Cat City, and the name was derived after the Cathedral Canyon that is in the southern part of the town in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains National Monument and Santa Rosa. The area where the present-day Cathedra City stands was inhabited by the Cahuilla Indians before the European settlers and explorers arrived in the area. The development of the town started after a housing subdivision was built in 1925. The community sits between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage, and it has the second largest population within the other cities in Coachella Valley in Southern California.
