Ceres is located in the state of California and a city in Stanislaus County. It is also part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area. It sits in San Joaquin Valley in the southern part of Modesto and the northern part of Turlock in Stanislaus County. The name of the city was taken after the Roman goddess of agriculture. The area where the present-day Ceres stands was inhabited by the Native Americans, and the settlers arrived in 1867. Daniel C. Whitmore was considered to be the founder of Ceres, and his family is considered to be the first family. Whitmore built his home in the site in 1870 called the Whitmore Mansion that still stands and was fully restored by the city and the Ceres Historical Society.
