Located in the state of California and in San Mateo County, Daly City is situated adjacent to San Francisco in between the Pacific Ocean and the San Bruno Mountains within the San Francisco peninsula. The area was first settled by the Ohlone Indians and was the site of the Spanish land grant during the 18th century. It was then later cultivated and developed as a farming community that was known as Vista Grade. The city was renamed to Dakky City in 1911 and absorbed the town of Colma, which has been known for its cemeteries after San Francisco banned burials at the start of the 20th century. At present, Daly City is dominantly a residential community and is also a regional center for retail and healthcare.
