Situated in the valley and along the Southern California coastal mountains, the city lies south of Los Angeles and northeast of San Diego. Escondido means "hidden" in Spanish. The town has roughly occupied a shallow valley that has been ringed by rocky hills is one of San Diego County's oldest cities. The residents of Escondido work for various industries, which include those who are working in educational, retail, health care, and social services, and among others. There are a lot of new communities that are starting to pop up at a rapid rate, like the Hidden Trails. The city itself is now being surrounded by sparsely populated, unincorporated communities. Escondido's downtown area has become more active over the years with the opening of new cafes, galleries, and restaurants.
