Located in the state of California and a city in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County with a population that is estimated at more than 85,000. The city is bordered to the north by the unincorporated community of Lennox and by the city of Inglewood. Hawthorne was founded as the Hawthorne Improvement Company in 1905 by B.L. Harding and H.D. Lombard. The city’s name was taken from the New England author Nathaniel Hawthorne since Harding’s daughter shared the same birthday on the 4th of July with the notable author that the decision was made. The city was once considered to be a community that is of “whites-only” and was commonly called as a sundown town that started in the 1930s wherein there are signs that are being placed all over that earns African-Americans to be out of Hawthorne by sundown.
