La Mirada is located in the state of California and a city in the southeastern part of Los Angeles County. The name meant “the look” in Spanish and was created by a printer and mapmaker from Chicago, Andrew MacNallt, and his son-in-law Edward Neff. The two developed the land they bought into his home and called it Windemere Ranch and surrounded the area with olive, orange, and lemon groves. They also built a plant that will process olive oil and fruits that were shipped all over the United States. When McNally turned over his property to the care of daughter and son-in-law, they formed the La Mirada Company which published “The Country Gentleman in California where it advertises the parcels of land for sale and includes the pictures, a map, and the description of the scenic olive, alfalfa, lemon, and grapefruit groves.
