Madera is located in the state of California and a city and seat of Madera County. It sits along the Madera-Chowchilla Metropolitan Statistical Area, and the city encompasses all of Madera County and along the San Joaquin Valley. It was named after the Spanish term that means lumber and was then laid out in 1876 by the California Lumber Company. A63-mile water flume was carrying lumber coming from the mountains going to Madera, where the lumber was then being shipped by the railroad. In 1877, the first post office was established on the site and was later incorporated in 1907. Madera’s famous landmarks include the historic and notable water tower and fully operation movie theater.
