The Tongva Native Americans have inhabited the present-day Monterey Park for at least seven hundred years. The Tongans lived in dome-like structures with thatched exteriors and created an open smoke hole for the ventilation and light at its top. When the Spaniards arrived in the area, they brought with them the Old World diseases that killed many of the Tongans, and only a few of the Native Americans survived by 1870.
