Murrieta is situated on the southwestern side of Riverside County in the state of California. Murrieta is bordered on the south by the city of Temecula, Menifee, and Wildomar on the north and the east by the unincorporated community of French Valley. With the city's rapid growth in population, according to the latest census, Murrieta is considered to be one of the fastest-booming towns in the state of California. With the continued rise of the city's population, it has already surpassed the historically more substantial and more commercialized city, Temecula, in the southern part of the state. Murrieta has a large residential area in character and has been typically known as a commuter town since a large number of its residents are commuting for work in the nearby counties. With the city's predominantly diamond features, Murrieta's city motto is "Gem of the Valley."
