National City is located in the state of California and is in San Diego's metropolitan area in the South Bay region and the southwestern part of San Diego County. The area of the present-day National City was inhabited as early as 130,000 years ago, as evidenced at the Cerutti Mastodon site. It was also found that the archaic period sites were found along the Sweetwater River, which runs within the city limits of the present-day National City. The territory was inhabited by the Diegueno tribe, known as Kamai, later occupied by the Kumeyaay, before the entry of the Spaniards in the area. During the late 18th and early part of the 19th century, the Kumeyaay established a village, which is on the northern part of the present-day National City limits.
