Located in the state of California and seat of San Mateo County, Redwood City is situated on San Francisco Bay’s western shore, and at the mouth of Redwood Creek at the south of San Francisco. The area was originally inhabited by Ohlone Indians and was a part of the Spanish land grant called Rancho de las Pulgas or “Ranch of the Fleas”. The area was an early port and had lumber, shipbuilding, and tannery industries that were the primary economic activity. The city was laid out as Mezesville and was then later renamed for its thriving redwood-timber business. With an economy that was stimulated by the modern deepwater harbor facilities, its growth and development have corresponded with the development of the San Francisco Bay area.
