Located in the state of California and a city in Los Angeles County, Santa Monica is surrounded by Los Angeles and lies in the Santa Monica Bay. Santa Monica was first laid out in 1875 as a local spring area. The city was then promoted as a port-terminus of the Los Angeles-to-Independence Railroad and as an ocean-side resort. In 1920, an aircraft company was established in the city and became the forerunner to the city’s modern industries in aerospace and communications. Although Santa Monica was considered and seen as an eclipse to the port by San Pedro, the city still prospered as a residential and vacation center. The city’s pier includes shops, restaurants, art galleries, a classic carousel, and theaters.
