Santee is located in the state of California and is a suburb of San Diego County, and is a part of the East County region and is in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The area where the present-day Santee started as a small, backcountry village that was founded in the late part of the 19th century and was then developed to become a multifaceted city that has a fascinating and colorful story. The first inhabitants of the community were the Kumeyaay people who established the village of Sinyeweche that is located in the San Diego River. The site of the present-day Santee was founded by a group that led the city to its incorporation and becoming a city a century after. The area served to raise cattle and as a county resort by the Scripps family.
