Broomfield is situated in the state of Colorado and is a consolidated city and county. In 1951, Broomfield's municipality was incorporated, which is in Boulder's southeastern corner. It was not known how it got its name. However, it was suggested by the researchers that it is from the broom corn that was grown in the area, it is tall sorghum that the farmers had used as brooms and as whisk brooms. The city's economy grew through annexations over the next three decades, and many of those crossed the county line into the four adjacent counties. The city's leaders began to push for the creation of the separate county to avoid the inefficiencies in dealing with four independent court districts, different county seats, and separate county sales taxes in the 1990s.
