Pensacola is located in the state of Florida and a city and seat of Escambia County. The city is considered as one of the largest metropolitan areas within the Gulf Coast region and the largest that is in between New Orleans and Tampa. The area where the present-day Pensacola stands were initially inhabited by the Muskogean-speaking people. The city was the site of the very first Spanish settlement that is within the borders of the continental United States that started in 1559. Before the establishment of St. Augustine, the agreement was then abandoned due to a hurricane and was not re-established until 1698. It serves as a seaport along the Pensacola Bay, which is being protected by the Santa Rosa barrier island and connects it to the Gulf of Mexico.
