Located in the southwestern part of Florida and Broward County, Pompano Beach is situated in the Atlantic Ocean. It is just north of Fort Lauderdale, which is about a few miles south of Boca Raton. The International Waterway has been passing through the mainland of the city and into the barrier beaches. The town was named after the choice food fish was caught in its coastal waters, and was then settled by farmers in 1884. The city's location was then moved farther inland because of the damage that the hurricane caused, and was then eventually turned into a winter market for fruits and vegetables. Pompano Beach is considered to be a resort community with the presence of significant beach resorts that are major destination spots.
