Frederick is located in the state of Maryland and a city and seat of Frederick County. It appears part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area, and the town became an essential component of the crossroads, which is located on the intersection of the major north-south Indian trails and of the east-west routes to the Chesapeake Bay. Frederick sits where Catoctin Mountains meet the rolling hills along the Piedmont region. The area had long become a crossroad even before the European settlers and traders arrived in the area. The original Native Americans who inhabited the area were said to have arrived and made the city their hunting ground by following the Monocacy River coming from the Susquehanna River watershed in Pennsylvania, going to the Potomac River watershed.
