Located in the northeastern side of the state of Massachusetts and a city in Essex County, Lynn is situated on the Nahant Bay and the Lynn Harbor which is on the northeast side of Boston. Shoemaking and tanning was the primary economic activity of the area during the colonial era, and the first iron-smelting works were built. When the shoe-sewing machine was introduced and that factory method was implemented, Lynn became the leading shoe center in the whole United States and a more diversified economy has prevailed. The services were mainly in health care and telecommunications and are now the primary sources of employment. Lynn has a large municipality that has wilderness areas now called Lynn Woods.
