Located in the state of Michigan and is the largest city in Oakland County, Farmington Hills forms part of the northwestern suburbs of the metropolitan area of the city of Detroit and is situated in the northeast downtown to Ann Arbor. The city has been consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the entire United States, as well as to the whole state of Michigan. The city also ranks as the 36th highest-income city in the United States. Farmington and Farmington Hills are two separate cities with separate services and addresses but were often thought to be the same community. The two cities when combined were part of the Farmington Township in the time of the Northwest Territory. When the city was developed, it included a renovated downtown, a vintage cinema, boutiques, numerous restaurants, exotic car dealerships, art galleries, various establishments and recreational parks.
