Located in the state of New Mexico and is the largest city and the economic hub of Sandoval County, a part of the city has extended into the expansive Albuquerque Metropolitan Area. A small portion of the city’s area also extends to the northern Bernalillo County. The name Rio Rancho was derived from Los Ranchos which extends along the Rio Grande in the Albuquerque Basin. At the start of the 1990s, the city has taken steps so that they can become more independent from its more popular Albuquerque neighbor, wherein they created establishments of separate school and library systems and made attempts to attract business settlement in the area. Oday, Rio Rancho has added the Downtown City Center development to its new projects, a new University of New Mexico West and the campus for the Central New Mexico Community College.
