Niagara Falls is located in the western part of the state of New York and a city and port of Niagara County and sits along the great falls of Niagara and is on the opposite of the town of Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada, and is on the northwestern part of Buffalo. In 1761, the British forces built the Fort Schlosser, and a grist mill and settlement was established in the area by Augustus Porter in 1805 or 1806 that they called Manchester. During the War of 1812, both the agreement and the fort was burned down by the British. However, the development of farmland in the surrounding area continued. The hydroelectric potential of the Niagara River was developed at the start of 1881, and the Niagara Falls Power Company was then organized in 1878.
