Chapel Hill is located in the central part of the state of North Carolina, and a town in Orange County. It sits in the southwestern part of Durham and on the northwestern part of Raleigh, and wherein the two latter cities form one of North Carolina's major urban areas, the Research Triangle. The area where the present-day Chapel Hill was founded and was named for the Church of England New Hope Chapel in 1792, wherein it once stood at the crossroads at the settlement's center. Along with Carbarro, it forms a university community as it is the seat of the University of North Carolina. The town's economy was primarily based on the university along with the number of research facilities that are within the vicinity of the Research Triangle Park that is near the eastern part of the city.
