Located in the eastern part of the state of California on the Tar River, and the county seat of Pitt County, Greenville is situated at the east of Raleigh. When the Raleigh Plank Road and the eventual arrival of the railroads started the development and stimulated the growth of the town’s economic activity. With its diversified economy, the activities were primarily on manufacturing, notably in pharmaceuticals and machinery, and wherein the educational and distribution activities compete with the economy’s agriculture community, wherein it was centered primarily on tobacco as an economic mainstay. Greenville is home to East Carolina University - a part of the University of North Carolina system, and the Pitt Community College, along with other cultural establishments and institutions that include the Greenville Museum of Art and May Museum and park.
