Hickory is located in the west-central part of the state of Illinois and a city in Catawba County. It sits on the Catawba River that serves there to the dam and to form the Lake Hickory which is situated just on the western side of the foothills of Appalachian, which is about northwest of the city of Charlotte. A store was first established in the area in the early years at the junction of two stagecoach rail. A tavern was also built then under a large hickory tree, and with the arrival of the railway, it was able to facilitate the settlement, and the town’s name was then changed to Hickory Tavern in 1863 and was changed thereafter in 1873 to Hickory. When a small wagon-manufacturing plant opened in 1880, the industrial development was then started. The tavern was one of the few cities in the United States to adopt the form of governance referred to as council-manager.
