Columbus, Ohio, is a port of entry and became the center for significant culture, commerce, and distribution. Columbus has enjoyed progressive and steady growth over the years because of its economic diversity, and there was no single activity that monopolized its economy. The majority of its residents have long been constituted by those with European ancestry. The proportion of the population has steadily increased with those of African American ancestry consisting of about one-fourth of the population. The city has a colorful and energetic nightlife along High Street and Brewery District, where the most popular bards and dance clubs are scattered. With a thriving LGBT community with an estimate of 4.3 percent of its residents in the metro area identify themselves as a member. The Columbus Pride Parade has been around since 1981 and is now the largest in the Midwest.
