Conroe is situated in the state of Texas and a city and seat of Montgomery County and is considered to be a principal city of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. The area where the present-day Conroe stands is named after Isaan Conroe, who was Northern-born Union Cavalry officer and as a Houston lumberman. He was also the first to found and establish a sawmill in the area in 1881. The city’s wealth was primarily from the lumber and oil industries and was initially called Conroe’s Switch. The influx of the population started in the late 19th century due to the demands of the piney wood forest that is abundant in the area. The city boasted its numbers of millionaires, though only for briefly.
