Located in the southern part of the state of Texas and a city in Hidalgo County, Mission sits in the lower part of Rio Grande Valley and was part of the MacAllen-Edinburg-Mission metropolitan area. In 1907, a settlement was made in the area near a mission established by the Oblate Fathers of the Franciscan order. The area was then later developed as a packing and shipping center for its agricultural products which are mostly citrus fruits and is the site of the Texas Citrus Fiesta, a celebration and a salute to the Texas Red grapefruit. The American Poinsettia Society is also located in the city.
