Port Arthur is located in the southeastern part of the state of Texas and a city in Jefferson City and is in the eastern part of Houston. The area where the present-day Port Arthur was inhabited by the Atakapa Indians during the 1800s. The early settlements that were established in the area starting in 1840 were unsuccessful, and in 1895 a town was organized by Arthur E. Stilwell as a port and a terminus to Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Gulf Railroad, that is presently known as Kansas City Southern Railway. A canal was then dredged in 1899 for the ongoing ocean vessels that pass by. And after two years, the gusher Spindletop blew a few miles away from Port Arthur, thus making the port a significant outlet for the oil and other range of products.
