San Marcos is located in the southern-central part of the state of Texas and a city ad seat of Hays County. The city sits along the San Marcos River and in the southwestern part of Austin. It was the Franciscan missionaries who first visited the river in 1709. The area where the present-day San Marcos stands were settled and the settlements were established in 1809 along the Camino Real river crossing and were then abandoned in 1812. After this, the Anglo-Americans resettled in 1846 and laid out the area in 1851 and cultivated the land as an agricultural and ranching center of the region. The city was chartered in 1877, and the growth was boosted upon the founding and construction of Southwestern Texas State University in 1899.
