Texas City is located in the state of Texas and a city in Galveston County. The city forms part of the Galveston-Texas City complex that sits along Galveston Bay. Texas City has a deepwater port that sits along the channels to the Gulf of Mexico and has expanded its industrial activities since World War I, which then includes the production of tin smelting, oil refining, and petrochemicals. The area was developed when the shippers from the Great Lakes recognized the potential advantages of having a port terminal. Over the years, Texas City has gone through several major disasters, which includes the hurricane in 1915 that severely damaged and swept over Galveston Island; the explosion of the French freight Grandcamp which is carrying ammonium nitrate in 1947, and several other disasters over the years that greatly affected the city.
