Weslaco is located in the state of Texas and a city in Hidalgo County. It sits on the southern tip of the state along the Rio Grande Valley near the Mexican border, which is just across the Rio Grande and from Nuevo Progreso, Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas. The name was derived after W.E. Stewart Land Company. The city was the hometown of Harlon Block, one of the Marines that was photographed while raising the flag at Iwo Jima, and of David Spielberg. The streets on the northern railroad all have Spanish names, and the ones that are on the south of the railroad tracks bear the names in English. This was due to a consequence in 19021 where a municipal ordinance declared that the land in the north of the tracks will only be reserved for the Hispanic residences and businesses, while the southern part of the tracks will be reserved for the Anglo-Europeans.
