Located in north-central Utah and a city in t=Utah County, the city is situated in the north part of the city of Provo. On the east side, the Provo River flows in Provo River Canyon and to the west lies Utah Lake, a remnant of the ancient Lake Bonneville. The city was previously named as Provo Bench after it was renamed by Walter Orem, the owner of the railroad. Orem was developed to become an agricultural district, unlike most of the other Mormons settlements where farmlands are sprawling outside the residential districts, the city was planned to blend the private homes among the orchards and fields. At present, Orem is a populous suburb in Salt Lake City and the area has developed from the introduction of high-technology manufacturing, television-production studios, software firms, which had displaced other industries in the city in the 1990s.
