Riverton is located in the state of Utah and a city in Salt Lake County and is a part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has grown rapidly over the years and is growing rapidly in the southwestern part of the Salt Lake Valley. The first settlers in the area were of European descent and have lived in the area where the present Riverton sits, which is located in the southern end of the Salt Lake Valley in the middle of the 1850s. The settlers were greatly scattered widely along the river banks in crude dugout homes. History accounts that the first settler along Riverton was Archibald Gardner. The area was then referred to as Gardnerville before it was changed to Riverton. There were three canals that were built all around the area that was used to extend the water that was from the nearby Jordan River up to the benchland areas which were then used to provide irrigation in the larger area.
