The city is an independent city and is not located within a county. It is situated on the border of North Carolina and one of the cities in the South Hampton Roads. The city is located in the coastal area of Virginia and has more than 400 years of American history. Residents and visitors in Chesapeake can have a glimpse of the past as there are traces of the early colonial settlement and of the American revolution is still visible throughout the area. Its 340 square miles is home to several major employers, and its position to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway has been an ideal and primal location for the shipping industry. The Chesapeake’s population is composed of 59% white, 36% African American, 5% Hispanic, and 3% are of Asian descent.
