Located in the southeastern part of the state of Virginia and is considered to be an independent city and a port, it is also the seat of Norfolk County. Portsmouth is situated in the Elizabeth River’s south shore and is on the opposite side of Norfolk City through a bridge that connects them. At the start of the American Civil War, members of the Union troops evacuated the navy yard and burned the area and it started the fall of the south’s store of equipment. And during the American-Spanish War, the navy then started to convert to using the steam and steel for building ships and subsequently produced the USS Texas, the first ship commissioned by the US Navy as a battleship. Portsmouth is one of the important US military complexes within the Hampton Roads.
